The Reserve

Name

The name “Quadris”, which means “squares”, refers to the regular shape of some ponds present in the area.

Site

The Quadris Nature Reserve, which covers about 7 ha., is located north-west of Fagagna.

History

The ponds are evidence of the use of the area in the past for the extraction of peat. This activity, started in 1700, caused the formation of the artificial ponds. The Reserve was started in the 1980's, with the project of reintroduction of the white stork in Italy.

Habitat

The reserve, with its wet habitat, is home to many bird species and a stopover and resting spot for migratory birds.

What to see in the reserve

You can see the typical flora of the area and some of the animals that live or stay here, such as ibises, storks, konik horses, wild geese, moorhens, mallards, ferruginous ducks, herons etc.

Of course the possibility to see the animals depends on the time of the year and the time of the day and even on a bit of luck.

Territory

The reserve is located a few hundred meters from the historic center of Fagagna, which is in the list of “the most beautiful villages in Italy”. The small town as well as the surrounding area offer the possibility of refreshments and overnight stays in various hotels, B&Bs and farmhouses, restaurants and pizzerias.

The reserve is about twenty minutes by car from Udine and you can easily get there via  the Collinare cycle paths.
